Graduate Call Notes 10-21-14: Attachment, Aversion and Surrender

Thank you Mickey for sharing the following quote that got us started.

Love is a portion of the soul itself, and it is of the same nature as the celestial breathing of the atmosphere of paradise. ~ Victor Hugo

The 5 Causes of Suffering – The 1st is the source of the other four.

  • Ignorance of our real nature – for the egos that don’t like that word, call it a limited sense of self. Not knowing the truth of what you are.
  • Egoism- mind/body identity. Qualities of consciousness below 500 on the Hawkins map. (See Last Weeks notes for the map)
  • Object referral- Wants, Likes, Pleasure, Attachment to Pleasure
  • Aversion- Don’t wants, Don’t likes, Pain
  • The fear of death which is a mistake of the intellect.

Surrender was the other component of the call. Most importantly surrender is pointing to letting go of resistance, letting go of our grievance, letting go of expectations. This letting go is also known as acceptance.

When we speak of unconditional acceptance and we combine it with appreciation, this is one definition for Love. So this tells us that to Love what we don’t like or don’t want we can clear it from our experience and thereby end the suffering we are currently experiencing.

We sustain all blocks by being identified with them. For example, “I am angry” or “I am depressed”. Even if we are not saying it we are being it in this example. Being it is sustaining it.

So if you are not being it, what does that look like? It looks like observing it, noticing it, witnessing it. These are qualities of consciousness associated with awareness itself, with the soul. This is what we are doing when we practice the 3 step clearing. We are simply noticing the fact that a negative emotion is present, acknowledging that it is not me, it’s a program. We then notice the location of the emotion in our body and then notice the characteristics of the energy. Hot, Cold, Heavy, Busy, Sharp, Dull, Tight, etc.

The end of suffering is accomplished when we have dis-identified from the mind altogether. When we have acknowledged that pleasure does not provide sustainable fulfillment and that suffering is voluntary. We have a choice!!!

Our method to succeed will always come down to the simplistic formula of starve what you don’t want – aversions, and feed what you do want – the emotions you believe you will get when you succeed.

Thank You everyone for the wonderful call tonight.

Namaste,

Gil McIff
