Blogging your Way to the Top!

Many people now in a variety of different camps feel that blogging offers individuals and businesses an entire spectrum of benefits. I was recently reading a friend’s blog late last night, when after a while I realized that I had ended up reading 7-8 posts covering a 3 week span.  Some of the events were the ‘daily journal’ type of postings, but many of them were the personal insight and quirky ‘look into my soul’ late night ramblings.

After about 30 minutes of flipping between postings and leaving comments I felt like I had got off of a 30 minute phone call with a friend. It was like I was catching up with them all over again and I knew everything that happened over the past month. It was very insightful. So now we can see the power of blogging as it relates to business. People that you never met and never will meet can get to know you on a much more intimate way at a distance.

I hear that many employers nowadays are ‘googling’ potential employees in search engines, looking them up on myspace or facebook, or trying to find their personal pages online. It is amazing what type of information you can find on people….many of which do not always put you in the best light.

There are 2 things to pull out of this. Number one, be careful of what you put out into the public domain. Even the late night ramblings. Number two, people really get to know you by what you write and blog about.  This can be an excellent marketing tool to find and convert people when you come off as being professional and insightful.  Sometimes it may mean to hold back from posting that crazy Halloween costume or biting your tongue (or fingers) from saying or typing something that may diminish the posture you’ve created for yourself. Keep those blogs coming, and blog your way to the top!
